Sports Psychology is a field of psychology that has just become popular within the last few decades. It combines kinesiology and psychology with the study of sports and exercise. For those who are interested in psychology and passionate about sports, sports psychology just might be the perfect degree for you. Here are some basic facts about sports psychology.

1. The main focus of sports psychology is the psychological and mental factors that occur due to participation in sports, exercise, or other forms of physical activities or that lead someone to participate in them.

2. A person who works as a sports psychologist applies his or her psychology expertise to the study of sports and exercise. Their main focus is how physical activity can affect a person’s well-being.

3. Athletes often work with sports psychologists in order to improve their athletic performance by developing mental strategies. If an athlete is facing certain mental obstacles that are keeping them from reaching their potential, a sports psychologist professional can help the person overcome these difficulties. Such mental conditioning help an athlete reach his or her potential.

4. Sports psychologists also work with individuals to help them cope with the pressure of competing. Athletes at all levels face this type of stress, which might include pressure from parents, coaches, team members, or fans. Personal expectations can also cause an athlete stress and anxiety.

5. Coaches of youth sports teams might work with a sports psychologist in order to find ways to motivate their team and promote positive self-esteem. They might also work directly with youth athletes in order to make their experience of playing sports more enjoyable.

6. Injured athletes often work with sports psychologists through their process of rehabilitation. An injured athlete might need help following the requirements of physical therapy, dealing with frustration and anger, or getting used to the fact that they can no longer compete in their sport.

7. Sports psychologists can work with individuals or groups who need assistance with increasing or maintaining a certain level of physical fitness. A sports psychologist can design an exercise motivation program for corporations, weight loss clubs, therapy groups, or other groups of people.

This article was written by Nathan Henley. He is a sports psychologist who specializes in performance improvement and injury rehabilitation. He also owns the site Sports Psychology Degree for students interested in getting a degree in sports psychology.

Anyone with any experience in either of these areas?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, holds a medical degree (MD or DO), and prescribes medication. His/her training is on the medical/ biological/ neurological bases of mental illness. While some may do therapy, they are not usually trained in psychotherapy.
A psychologist has a PhD or PsyD and specializes in therapy, psychological assessment, and consultation (amongst other things). To hold the title of psychologist, they are required to have a doctorate. They are trained in psychological theory and the behavioral, cognitive, social, dynamic (etc) causes of mental illness. In most states, they cannot prescribe medication. However, in some states (like New Mexico and Louisiana, I believe), psychologists can prescribe medication with additional training.
A therapist is much like a psychologist, however, they are Masters-level and do not perform formal psychological evaluations/assessments.

If you want to be a psychiatrist, other than seeing patients, you can also do research or work for an HMO.

At CUNYs community colleges, young women of color account by far for the largest percentage of total enrollment of any demographic group. But until recently, there has been virtually no research into the specific—and unique—issues these women face as students.

That gap is now being filled by a first-of-its-kind study co-directed by Lisa Rose, coordinator of BMCCs Human Services Program and an associate professor of Social Sciences; and Precious Sellars-Mulhern, a counseling psychologist in the Counseling Center and associate professor of counseling. Funded by a grant from the New York Community Trust and entitled The Community College: Odyssey: Identifying and Addressing the Obstacles for Women of Color, the project involves Hostos and LaGuardia Community Colleges as well as BMCC, which is serving as the lead institution.

Starting with a blank slate
One of the things that sets this project apart is that we went into it with absolutely no agenda or preconceived notions of what wed find, says Rose. Our sole objective at this stage was to collect data.

In the first stage of the study, focus groups were held with students at each campus; researchers are now using the findings as the basis of interviews with directors of various student programs and department chairs at all three campuses.

What the researchers discovered, to their surprise, was that childcare and outside jobs—key issues facing female students in the past—are of little concern to female students today.

Virtually none of the students in our study said they had children to care for, and few had outside jobs, says Sellars-Mulhern. Indeed, women of color who are currently enrolled at CUNYs community colleges are typically much younger than those who attended a generation ago. What we did find—and this is quite poignant—is that among the younger students in our study, especially those who had completed fewer than 16 credits, there was a sense of being lost, confused, and disconnected from the campus community, Sellars-Mulhern adds. They had ambitious academic goals. But they werent using the resources and support services available to them and often expressed a sense of boredom.

Almost without exception, study participants conveyed a determination to ignore distractions, study hard and earn their degrees. But they face constant obstacles—often because theyd been given misinformation, or changed majors without precipitously, or had academic troubles and didnt know where to look for help, Rose says.

Tellingly, the researchers found that most students were receptive to the idea of taking part in focus groups. But of those who committed to participating, relatively few showed up.

We saw this as a challenge, not a defeat, says Rose. The fact is that, even without childcare responsibilities or jobs, these students have complex obligations outside of class—babysitting, perhaps, or caring for an older relative. As a result, they want to spend whatever time they have on campus the library or computer lab.

A key factor in the womens sense of confusion and disconnectedness is that they often do not know where to turn for counsel and guidance. Many of these young women are the first members of their families to attend college, Sellars-Mulhern notes. And while they may have the support of their families, they have no one they can bring their questions and problems to.

Needed: A culture of collaboration
To be sure, there are abundant resources and programs at all three participating schools, such as BMCCs peer mentoring and Ambassador programs for incoming freshmen. But there is no concerted effort to coordinate these offerings or make sure students know about them, Sellars-Mulhern says. There are a lot of people doing good work, but information, insights and outcomes are not being shared across organizational lines. As a result, students often fall through the cracks.

Adds Rose, We need to create a culture of collaboration, so that we can collect data, look at these innovative ideas and figure out what works best. Once weve completed our interviews of department chairs and program heads, we will see where the most effective initiatives are and how we can capitalize on them.

To date, most programs have been geared to the needs of either high- or under-achieving students, leaving a vast middle ground—students in the 2.5-to-3.2 GPA range—underserved. So we will focus on allocating resources for students in that group, Rose says. The idea, adds Sellars, is to reach out to them from the moment they walk in the door.

Duration : 0:15:13
